Pam Iovino ran against businessman D. Raja in a special election for State Senate district 37. Running in a Republican-leaning seat, Iovino highlighted her experience in the Navy and bipartisan politics to gain support. She ultimately won with 54% of the votes to Raja’s 46%. This red-to-blue flip was the first in the country in 2019.
Ampersand provided campaign strategy and implementation; staff training; and direct mail during the 2019 special election and her 2020 re-election bid.
For the 2019 campaign, Ampersand won an overall direct mail Pollie award — a recognition for one of the top direct mail programs in the nation as well as recognition for our piece “Commanding Officers.” That year, we were awarded Goldie awards for overall excellence in direct mail, radio, use of contrast in mail, and biographical communication in mail. For the 2020 campaign, we were recognized with a Gold Regional Pollie for GOTV mail.
